More Monster Matrimony

To accompany the Mighty Bongo's last post on Gemora and I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE here's a nice complement of ephemera from the film.

BOLLYWOOD GOES APE

GORILLA (1953) Indian

Way, way back when I first began this journey into the mysterious cinematic regions of the Gorilla Men, I recall coming across a mention of an East Indian picture called GORILLA that one would naturally assume, had a gorilla suited lead. Unfortunately, I was unable to uncover much about it and apart from coming across a few muddy pics of lobby cards on Ebay, I haven't given it much thought in quite some time. My usual auction crawl revealed the lovely poster above - and the angry fellow tossing about the native has given me a renewed desire to find this early Bollywood offering. The possibilities of a large scale musical dance number featuring a shaggy simian boggles the mind!
The poster above also features a nicely reworked swipe from THE BRIDE OF THE GORILLA, released two years earlier.

THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE PRIMATE

ORIGINALLY POSTED 3-14-2010

I'm gonna venture a guess that this commercial is Thai but I'm probably wrong. Anyhow, I've got Kong on the brain after Rhoderic sent me his new video and this recent ad made me smile...and the ape's not too shabby!
Enjoy!

Here's another ad with a former Kong co-star by the same outfit that produced the pen commercial. Give it a whirl -it's a damn shade funnier than the first!

GORILLA VS SPAINARD

ORIGINALLY POSTED 1-2-2009

I became aware of El Desván del Abuelito a short while ago through some fantastic 50's Spanish Sci-Fi comics that were reposted at PCL LINKDUMP. Tracking back to the source of the pulpy four colour delights revealed a Spanish site that was avidly celebrating both imported North American genre entertainment of the past and the local product as well.
The site's purveyor Pedro dropped me a line back in early December but I haven't had the time to give his work a proper nod. In that email, Pedro shared with me his wonderful post featuring the apes.
There are some of the covers of an ancient Spanish comic character, Roberto Alcázar y Pedrín, created by Spanish artist Eduardo Vañó.
Roberto Alcázar was one of the most famous and popular comic characters between 1940 and 1975 (the long, long years of dictator Franco), with more than 1.000 comics published. He was a "Nick Carter" type, who, helped by the young Pedrín, fought a lot of fantastic enemies: gangsters, robots, mad doctors... and, of course, GORILLAS and killer apes.

Below are a few samples - head on over to El Desván del Abuelito to enjoy the rest.

CONFUSING KONGS

ORIGINALLY POSTED 12-07-2008

KING KONG ESCAPES Italian one sheet 1967

For a film that is pretty damn goofy, this Italian one sheet from 1967 envisions a horrific trail of carnage and destruction far removed from the Saturday morning matinee vibe this TOHO release has. I must admit however, if a 60 foot ape came tearing through a crowded metropolis the results would be ugly!

PRIMAVERA PONGO

ORIGINALLY POSTED 12-04-2008

This Italian poster for WHITE PONGO (1945) has a hairy leg up on the domestic release at depicting Corrigan's stunning albino ape as a fearsome beast though I don't recall the film's femme, Maris Wrixon appearing quite so disheveled .

I have a weakness for pop culture viewed through a Spanish prism - there's just a little extra charm with that Latin flair. The comics above are from a massive Flickr set created by a recent admirer of my very own pics. Check em out!

THE APE MAN

ORIGINALLY POSTED 10-19-2008

the_ape_man_belgian

You would imagine that a poster featuring Bela Lugosi and a killer ape would be the main focus of your attention but how can you ignore the grotesque blond?! Slightly more disturbing than that highly polished white smile - the racist brooch pinned to her lapel - oh..my...lord!

IT AIN'T PRETTY

ORIGINALLY POSTED 9-15-2008

I thought I would break my habit of posting vibrant, bold, stylized foreign poster material that creatively re-imagined the original domestic source with a post about the other side of the coin. This Pakistani one sheet of JUNGLE GIRL is butt ugly - that giant ape creature is beyond creepy. Anyone aroused by the hotty with poor posture about to be chewed on by a gator? Now that I think about it...I don't think there's a damn gorilla in JUNGLE GIRL, let alone a Kong sized one.

PARISIAN NABONGA

ORIGINALLY POSTED 9-7-2008

While NABONGA is a somewhat lackluster flick, Ray 'Crash' Corrigan provided a striking subject for the arresting advertising material. This French one sheet manages to become even more distinctive by the economy minded choice of only using black and red for the image. Click through to super-size it on Flickr.

GORILLA VS BRUCE LEE

 ORIGINALLY POSTED 9-6-2008

Gorilla suits and martial arts proved an unsavory union in KING KUNG FU but these clips from BRUCE LEE THE INVINCIBLE (a film that does not actually star Bruce Lee) prove that given the right man in the fur, it can be more than bearable. Both clips have the szchewuan simian bustin' some great moves but the second features some truly bizarre moments and a protracted death scene worth sticking around for.

APE Belgian poster

Truly hideous foreign one sheet for A*P*E (1976) that doesn't quite capture the moronic charm of this bastard cousin of KING KONG. Do yourself a disservice and dig it up. When the ape flips you the bird - you'll know why...

SPHAGETTI KONG

ORIGINALLY POSTED 8-28-2008

I recently came across this Italian one sheet for the Kaiju Kong flick KING KONG ESCAPES. I particularly like the use of the cockpit as the vantage point to depict the mightiest of apes. This version of Kong pre-dates the 70's remake but the poster art reminds of some of the promotional images used for the Dino De Laurentiis film.
Click the image to head over to Flickr where you can view it in a supersized format rich with detail.

MONSIEUR CONGO BILL

ORIGINALLY POSTED 8-10-2008

Torn from the pages of DC Comics, jungle adventurer Congo Bill faced off wild animals and intrigue in the 1948 serial, aptly titled, CONGO BILL. I have a variety of chapter poster images and a few stills but this French one sheet has a stunning and vibrant colour scheme.

SIMIAN SWEDE

ORIGINALLY POSTED 7-31-2008

Here's another foreign poster for your viewing pleasure - this time a foreign film as well. The Swedish produced GORILLA (1956) was a blend of location shot safari material and scripted drama about a white hunter tracking down a rogue ape. I have a Belgian poster for this film kicking around the Gorilla Men Vaults somewhere, but this French one sheet proves once again those European releases  often feature stunning graphic work.

Google tells me the title translates as The Man Who Became a Gorilla - if only I paid attention in French class!

LES GORILLA EN FRAN-SEZ

ORIGINALLY POSTED 7-27-2008

Canada's bilingual don't cha know?
I am always amazed how foreign release posters are so distinctive from their domestic counterparts. Polish one sheets from the 60's and 70's are notoriously bizarre - do yourself a favour and peruse a site or two on the subject. Belgian and French versions always catch my eye; they are often colourful and have a striking graphic quality.
I have MARK OF THE GORILLA (1950) kicking around the Gorilla Men lair but have yet to watch all of it. I can't say I am too familiar with Weismeuller's films but I am a huge fan of his original TARZAN (1932) appearance. What I have seen so far of his role in MARK makes me think he was better off grunting 'Me Tarzan, you Jane', however it's possible it's not one of his better performances.
I love the simplicity of the French release one-sheet of this Jungle Jim film but I am uncertain if the sepia tones of the background were intentional or the result of paper tanning.

VALKOINEN GORILLA

ORIGINALLY POSTED 7-22-2008

It's getting late here but I have had an unbroken streak of posts and I want to maintain the regularity of entries here. If I am short of time or cannot whip up a fervor about a particular topic, I promise to at least post a striking image from the Gorilla Men archives.
The Finnish poster for WHITE GORILLA (1945) has some fantastic graphics and a bold colour scheme. I am uncertain when the Finnish release would have dated from but the apparent age of the poster would lead me to think that it was a recent rerelease, possibly from the 50's or 60's.
