We first met Fred in part one of this post. and now shed a little more light on his mysterious past.

frighteningly knowledgeable Doctor Kiss, we have uncovered more amazing facts and fantastic photos of Fred Humes !

As these incredible close-ups from "Circus Rookies, 1928", provided by Doctor Kiss show, this version of Fred's mask (different from the one he wore in Lorraine of the Lions) was similar in appearance to both Charles Gemora's and Emil VanHorns masks. The general appearance is nearly identical to Charlie's suit from "The Circus Kid 1928", but the eye opening is like that of VanHorn, a single large opening rather than two individual eye openings.

ReplyDeleteI just found LORRAIN OF THE LIONS a few weeks back up on YouTube and it is amazing. According to newspaper articles at the time it was a Universal Jewel, which means it would have probably been regarded at the studio with the same importance as Lon Chaney's HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. How is it that we don't know more about LORRAIN and Fred Humes' Gorilla appearance in it? His performance was "Gemora" quality. Elsewhere it was suggested that perhaps Charlie even had a hand in the construction of Fred's suit? Any substantiation available for this statement or are we just assuming that any good ape suit done after a certain point in Hollywood history Charlie had a hand in building?
ReplyDeleteThe excellent documentary CHARLES GEMORA: UNCREDITED states that the Apeman hair suit that Mr.Gemora made on commission per Perc Westmore at First National for Cecil Holland's missing link make-up on Bull Montana in THE LOST WORLD ('25) was Charlie's first simian suit. If he worked on Fred Hume's suit, it would have had to have been created around the same time (or shortly after). This would mean that Fred's suit would have been Mr.Gemora's first fully constructed (head & body) Gorilla costume? If this is so, then it would be a big deal to identify it as such. Anyway to confirm this?
